Instead of collecting candy on Halloween, the Hunger Heroes collected almost 700 lbs. (316 kg) of hygiene items and non-perishable food items for The Mustard Seed.
The Hunger Heroes are five children from two families who want to get the word out that children can be a part of eliminating hunger from the world.
They dropped off flyers at 398 household one week before Halloween, then on Halloween they went around the neighborhood in their Hunger Heroes costumes picking up the donations – with their mums pushing the collection cart behind them.
“I know that if people buy candy for kids who don’t need it, then they would definitely buy food for people who really do need it,” said Mateo.
On their first adventure in 2014, they collected more than 400 lbs. (181 kg) of food. With an almost 700 lbs. (316 kg) haul this year, the Hunger Heroes are setting their sights on an even bigger goal next year – 1,000 lbs. (454 kg) of food and hygiene items, and they want YOUR help.
