About Us

DemoCrew is an exciting, inner-city street experience for students. The immersive program provides students with a deeper understanding of poverty and homelessness, and opportunities to serve at The Mustard Seed. Through experiential learning, workshops, devotions, and service opportunities, students are encouraged to think critically about social issues, and they are challenged to consider what the Christ-centered responses to these issues look like today.

DemoCrew

An Alberta inner-city street experience

The standard DemoCrew program runs weekly in the month of July. It is best suited to church youth groups looking for a different kind of summer missions trip, where they can serve people in need through The Mustard Seed and also engages in meaningful learning about the issues facing the most vulnerable in our society. We’re passionate about DemoCrew because of the way it prepares and challenges students to engage with God’s call for social justice in their own communities.

DemoCrewPlunge

DemoCrewPlunge programs run from September to June. Plunges are best suited to church youth groups and school groups. Programs can be one to five days in length, with serving opportunities and learning experiences customized to the group.

CollegeCrew

CollegeCrew is a service-learning program for post-secondary students and young adults groups. CollegeCrew programming runs from September to June and can be one to five days in length. Service and learning opportunities are selected based on the group and the length of programming.

Calgary DemoCrew programs can accommodate groups of 10 to 30 people, while Edmonton DemoCrew programs can accommodate groups of 10 to 20 people.

During DemoCrew in July, youth groups with less than the maximum group size often share the week with a second group in order to maximize the number of groups able to participate.

DemoCrewPlunge & CollegeCrew program fees are dependent on the programming & length of programming. Please contact us at DemoCrew@theseed.ca for more information.

What’s the Schedule like?

Each DemoCrew schedule is unique. Activities are based on the size of group and the goals of the group leader. Every schedule is packed with learning, volunteer and service opportunities, time to interact with guests and residents at The Mustard Seed, and a few fun surprises for students that are best kept secret.

What about meals and accommodation?

We arrange your group’s nighttime accommodations. The facilities are comfortable and safe, but simple – there are no showers for the duration of the program and students must bring their own sleeping gear.

Our team provides group meals for the duration of the program. As a part of the registration process we ask each participant for information about allergies and dietary restrictions, and we do our very best efforts to meet their needs.

What should I bring?

  • Knapsack/Daypack – this is for carrying your items with you throughout the day, so please don’t pack all your items into the backpack before arriving.
  • Water bottle
  • Sleeping bag, pillow, foam pad or air mattress
  • Personal items (toiletries, towel, soap, etc.)
  • Bible and notebook
  • Clothing – when you are selecting your clothes keep in mind that we spend a significant amount of time outdoors and our weather is very unpredictable. Be prepared for the season.
As well, please ensure that your clothing is appropriate (i.e. no spaghetti strap tank tops, no really short shorts, no mid-riff shirts, no leggings etc.).
  • Good shoes/boots for walking – we will be doing lots of walking, so be sure that the shoes you bring are comfortable and allow you to spend lots of time on your feet. Sandals are not permitted during any volunteer time at The Mustard Seed, though you can wear them during your downtime at the house if you like.
