Honouring the Legacy of The Mustard Seed’s 96 Street Church

On August 27th, The Mustard Seed staff and community gathered to formally decommission our 96 Street Church — a space that has been a cornerstone of the Boyle McCauley neighbourhood in Edmonton since the 1980s.

This ceremony marked the formal closure of the building, which ceased operations in October 2024 due to significant structural concerns and the high cost of restoration.

This space has been more than a building; it has been a place where lives were touched and transformed. Within its walls, thousands of moments of hope unfolded: every meal shared, every cup of coffee poured, every conversation that reminded someone they were not alone.

We are deeply grateful to every volunteer, donor, staff member, neighbour, and guest who helped make this space what it was — a true place of community. The memories and relationships formed here will continue to influence our work for years to come.

While we are saying goodbye to this physical space, The Mustard Seed’s work continues.

From this single location 40 years ago, our operations in Edmonton have expanded to two shelters, three community impact centres, our wellness centre, thrift store, and donation centre — along with three permanent housing buildings that provide affordable, stable, and supportive homes for people exiting homelessness.

Though the future of this land is still to be determined, we trust that the legacy of the 96 Street Church will continue to inspire whatever comes next.
