Employment
Employment Services
The Mustard Seed Employment Program supports unemployed individuals in finding sustainable job
opportunities, while also helping businesses and other organizations to meet their staffing
requirements.
Our Employment Coaches interact with community participants who face barriers to employment. We
take the time to learn about their work & life history, identify & develop strengths and skills, and set
goals for the future. Participants
are then assisted in creating resumes, writing cover letters, applying for jobs, and practicing
interview skills. Through workshops and in conjunction with partner organizations, we also help to
develop general workplace skills and offer
job-specific training and certification opportunities. Furthermore, The Mustard Seed also offers work
experience programs which help individuals to gain confidence and prepare for
market employment.
The Employment Program’s focus is on equipping participants with the skills to be successful in
both the job search and the workplace, as well as empowering them to achieve greater independence.
“The insights and coaching from The Mustard Seed Employment Program served as an invaluable lynchpin in furthering my chances to obtain the employment that I was aiming for. The Employment Coach took the proper time and care to get to know me as a person and my employment objectives, and she tailored her coaching style to my employment needs. She was wonderful in guiding and coaching me from start to finish, beginning with a proper resume to a mock interview and finally in obtaining the job that were favorable to my strengths and skill set. She also provided follow-up services to ensure my employment situation went well after I began. I would recommend their employment program to anyone looking to seek and maintain meaningful work.”

About the employment Program
A person’s employment status has a significant impact on one’s wellbeing, happiness, and quality
of
life.
Beyond the financial aspect, having a job also brings daily structure, pride, purpose, and
relationships. From a community perspective,
employment has a significant impact on reducing homelessness, poverty, relapse, recidivism, and
reliance
on government assistance.
Many people experiencing homelessness and poverty face significant barriers to
employment.
Often, they may lack marketable skills, recent experience, or necessary certifications. They may
not
know how to write a resume or have
the confidence to go for an interview. They may not have a phone for job call backs or reliable
internet
access to check for emails from potential employers. Even after a successful interview, their
lack
of
professional references or,
for some, their criminal record may become obstacles.
By building relationships with community members, The Mustard Seed Employment Program
learns
about each individual’s needs, strengths, and desires, then supports them in navigating the job
search
process and addressing the barriers
they may face in re-entering the workforce. The Employment Centre offers a range of services including one-on-one coaching, group workshops, training
referrals,
and
more. Successes along the way—both big and small—are
acknowledged and celebrated.
Confidence is built. Individuals are empowered. Hope is restored.
Our 2023 Impact

“Words cannot express how grateful I am that programs like these exist. These services have helped me move on from a very dark point in my past and once again become a functioning, contributing member of society and continue to help me succeed. Thanks for everything.”
About The Mustard Seed
The Mustard Seed is a non-profit organization that has been caring for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty. Serving Calgary and Edmonton for over 35 years and with several community hubs across the cities, The Mustard Seed is a supportive haven where people can have their physical, mental, and spiritual needs met and grow toward greater health and independence with services including wellness advocacy, chaplaincy, housing, food supports, and more. As necessary, participants of the employment program may be referred to these other services to encourage their holistic wellbeing.
Job Seekers
Searching for a job is stressful for most people. It can be even more challenging for those who have been
unemployed for a lengthy period, are looking to change careers, have never written a resume, do not have
the required certification for
their intended position, or are unsure of what to expect in an interview.
The Mustard Seed’s Employment Coaches are available to help answer these questions and provide
guidance to individuals seeking to return to the workforce.
The approach that the Employment Centre takes is to empower individuals to discover their own
path and to build up the skills to overcome obstacles as they arise. The coach supports and cheers on
the participants as they become
more self-sufficient.
Services
One-on-One Coaching
The Mustard Seed Employment Program supports each participant according to their needs. From the initial
conversation onward, an Employment Coach will work with individuals to determine where they are at in
their employment journey, identify
goals, and build an action plan outlining practical steps to finding employment. Coaches develop
relationships with clients, hold them accountable to their goals, and help find solutions to overcome
challenges that may arise.
Workshops & Training
We offer training opportunities aimed at increasing their self-efficacy in the job
search process. Our hope is to see individuals become self-sufficient in crafting their resumes,
applying for jobs & networking, and developing strategies
to stand out with potential employers. While these workshops are focused primarily on increasing job
search and employment skills, they also have practical life applications as we discuss goal setting,
boundaries, communication, and listening.
With the support of a few generous partners, we are also able to connect participants with safety
tickets and other training opportunities that may be required for employment.
Some training opportunities are currently paused. Please check back or contact us for course details
and schedules.
Work Experience
Finding a job can be difficult with a lack of recent work experience and professional references.
Reintegrating into the workplace can be challenging after some time away from it. For some individuals,
succeeding in a job may require a period of adjustment as they get back into a daily routine, build up
stamina, and interact with more people. This is where our work experience programs come in. Individuals
gain short- to medium-term experience in a supportive environment and prepare for market employment with
the guidance of an Employment Coach.
Fast Track
Every individual has unique needs when it comes to the job search process. While
some may need ongoing supports, others may simply have a question, want a resume template, need access
to a computer, or require workwear and personal
protective equipment. Whatever the challenge, we try to assist individuals either directly or by
directing towards other resources in the community. We would be happy to hear from you and see how we
might be able to assist you in finding
or maintaining employment.
Referrals
The Mustard Seed supports the whole person: physically, through meeting basic
needs like food, shelter and clothing; emotionally, through counselling and relationships; financially,
through income support programs; and spiritually,
through counselling and prayer support. Given the breadth of the organization, Employment Coaches will
be able to refer participants to other Mustard Seed teams or staff to provide them with holistic,
wrap-around supports.
“The Mustard Seed Employment Program helped me with my resume and supported me on my journey with finding a job and encouraged me to keep going. The Employment Coach got so excited when I told her that I finally got a job. The Coach has supported me throughout my achievements, and we communicate with each other to this day. If you are thinking about going through this program, you will be very glad you did. They helped me, and they can help you too.”
