“It’s hard to believe that the store has been open for 5 years!” says a staff member from The Mustard Seed Thrift Store.
Opening on September 26, 2020, The Mustard Seed Thrift Store has experienced milestones that allowed them to become one of the thrift hubs in Edmonton.
Located at 6527 118 Ave in Edmonton, The Mustard Seed Thrift Store has become a staple in the Highlands and Montrose neighbourhoods. With an organizational vision of eliminating poverty and reducing homelessness where we serve, the thrift store extends this mission by offering affordable, gently used items and a dignified shopping experience for everyone.
To get a better understanding of the impact that The Mustard Seed Thrift Store has in the community, we asked staff, volunteers, and customers questions that outline their experience with the thrift store.
“It’s a great location for me to access, but more than convenience, it’s the attitude of the volunteers and staff,” says one volunteer when asked what motivates them to keep coming back to the store.
“Every single shift, the staff will tell you how thankful they are that you showed up, and you can tell they really mean it. It makes you feel good to help, both from the people you work with, and knowing you’re making a difference in the community,” they continued.
When we asked one of our customers what they were grateful for about the store, they said, “[The store is a] pleasant environment to find things that I need at an affordable price.”
A staff member also said, “We’ve served individuals in all walks of life, and I’m grateful that we’ve been able to help the community and the environment. Our slogan is ‘Purchase with a Purpose’, and that resonates with everyone in the building.”
Lastly, we asked how the store has impacted their lives and their community. One volunteer said, “I love that whether you’re a paying customer or needing a helping hand, everyone is treated with respect and generosity.”
They then continued to mention their experience and added, “I’ll never forget the first time I went to the store. I was new to the city and didn’t know anyone, and the lady at the till talked to me like she’d known me forever.”
Another volunteer said, “It has been a lifesaver for me! You need people, especially when you’re no longer working; you need to have something else.” then mentioned that we serve many individuals with different journeys in their lives.
“For some people, it is also kind of an anchor to come here. To have a safe spot, and to come here to be heard.”
Five years in, The Mustard Seed Thrift Store is more than a place to shop. It’s a welcoming space where everyone is treated with respect.
