How Your Impact Changed Lives
Support, Stability, and a Second Chance: Carl’s Story
Carl never imagined his life turning out like this. His wife worked in health care and as the demand of her job during the pandemic increased, her and Carl began to grow apart. Then Carl got sick and couldn’t work, and the dominos just kept falling.
Carl wanted to give up. One problem kept coming in his life after another, like
dominos toppling over. Carl’s marriage was over, he had no home, and no job –
he was completely out of options. That was when he showed up at The Mustard
Seed.
“One day my wife said, I think I want to live alone. And that was that,” says Carl.
So, Carl moved out and bought a camping trailer to live in – but life was far from a vacation.
His health continued to decline and when his truck broke down and he couldn’t afford to fix it –
Carl could no longer work.
“That felt like the end,” says Carl.

He felt like he had no other choice, so he came to The Mustard Seed for help. It was there he found the support he needed and for the first time in a while, Carl felt like he could take a breath. Through The Mustard Seed, Carl was accepted into supportive housing and was able to move into an apartment from the shelter.
But more than housing, Carl found a community. He met people that had similar
struggles to him, making friends and connecting over shared experiences.
“I really respect this place because they do everything, they give you all the tools.
If you really want to get out of here, you can,” says Carl.

Small Actions Make Big Impacts

Vivian truly has a heart for the most vulnerable. As a shelter worker, Vivian works directly with those experiencing homelessness every day, offering clean clothes, a meal, or a listening ear to anyone that walks through The Mustard Seed’s doors.
Basic needs like clothes, underwear, hygiene items and food may seem small, but to someone that just walked off the streets into The Mustard Seed, they mean everything.
“A lot of people don’t have access to showers, a lot of them wear the same pair of pants, even the same underwear for months,” says Vivian.
One day, a guest walked into the Community Impact Centre (CIC), alone, limping, and covered in dirt. He signed in and immediately went to sit alone on the floor. Vivian walked over to check on him and see how he was doing. The guest began crying and yelling at Vivian, voicing his anger about his day. She saw that he wasn’t mad at her, so she listened to his frustrations and then offered him some food and clean clothes. Once he changed and washed his face, the guest was like a new person. He sat calmly with Vivian and ate, thanking her for her help.
“He was saying that he feels like no one cares for him and that nobody really sees him,” says Vivian. “He was injured and had no bandages and had no clean clothes. I wanted to show him that I was there to help, that this was a safe place.”
Every day, Vivian sees situations like this – a small action being the difference in someone’s day. Your donations make it possible for front line staff, like Vivian, to keep supporting guests as soon as they walk through our doors.
