The Mustard Seed offers services that help people make positive and lasting change in their lives.

No one grows up dreaming they will be poor. We know by offering support to people experiencing poverty and homelessness they will be able to rebuild their lives.

Calgary Services

Basic Services

The Mustard Seed meets the immediate needs of men and women experiencing homelessness by providing emergency shelter, food, clothing, hot showers and hygiene supplies.

Our Foothills Emergency Shelter has a capacity for 370 adults. On average we shelter 350 individuals per night, hitting our capacity many nights of the year. The average stay for individuals is two weeks. We offer a hot breakfast and dinner and provide a bagged lunch for all shelter guests. As many as 40% of our guests have jobs, but cannot afford a place to live.

Housing

The Mustard Seed knows that making a real difference in the lives of individuals involves more than emergency services and basic needs.

We help our guests with housing in three key areas:

Aftercare

Client-driven case management and housing support for individuals.

This Housing First program supports clients with mental illness and/or addictions.

Permanent Supportive Housing

Independent or communal living with support from assigned, trained staff.

This includes rental units on the open market, as well units owned and operated by The Mustard Seed.

Housing Advocacy

System navigation and help finding external funding and housing.

The Mustard Seed’s meal program serves evening meals Monday through Saturday for individuals and families.

The Mustard Seed Food Depot provides free food hampers to families and individuals. Volunteer intake workers help over 7,000 clients a year.

Personal Assistance Centre

The Personal Assistance Centre (PAC) provides short-term relief to individuals and families by supplying small household goods, personal hygiene items and clothing – free of charge. The items are displayed in a store-like environment where individuals can use a shopping list to find the items they need. PAC is based on the belief that everyone is equal and should be given the opportunity to present themselves in a dignified manner.

Community Support Services

Employment Readiness

The Employment Readiness Program assists community members with various training opportunities, the job search process and support during the early stages of employment.

The Mustard Seed also provides practical job-related items such as work boots.

Life Skills Education

We also provide case management support, where compassionate Support Workers provide guidance to community members as they make decisions to change their lives. The Life Skills Education Program offers community members a chance to learn skills and information that will be helpful for daily living.
