“Working at the thrift store was a truly valuable experience that helped me grow both personally and professionally. My time at the thrift store helped me build confidence, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.”

For many, there are significant barriers when it comes to finding work. These can include a lack of permanent addresses, limited access to hygiene and laundry, limited internet or phone access, and lack of transportation. Thanks to the generous support from United Way BC through the Work Experience Opportunities Grant (WEOG), The Mustard Seed is working to break down these barriers and support more people in finding permanent employment.
Through this grant, The Mustard Seed was able to offer short-term paid placements, allowing participants to gain essential skills training and hands-on experience. This grant also helped people receiving income or disability assistance to obtain equivalent federal support to overcome employment barriers. Funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, and administered by United Way BC, this grant also helps non-profits expand their programs and services.
In Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer, The Mustard Seed provides comprehensive employment programming, including job-readiness support, resume development, and individualized coaching. Through the 2025 WEOG, Men's Recovery Program participants had access to paid retail work experience, as well as First Aid and WHMIS training, emotional support, job-specific and soft skills coaching, community involvement, and logistical supports such as bus passes.
This past year, the Thrift Store Work Experience Program had six participants who completed a total of 1,440 hours of training and work. The program enabled participants to take the lead, giving them the chance to learn new life skills they could apply beyond graduation. The Mustard Seed also offers system navigation services through its team of Advocates, who are available to offer support following program completion, if desired.
